The Iceman Review
The Iceman is the movie fans of Goodfellas have been waiting for!!
The Iceman is the true story of Richard Kuklinski one of history’s most innovative contract killers. Over a period of three decades Kuklinski murdered 100 people or possibly more. He worked for mob crew captain Roy Demeo for many years before taking contracts from other mob associates. His wife Deborah and children were completely oblivious to the fact that Richard was a ruthless killer. Deborah thought that he earned his money from currency trading. Kuklinski was very creative in his assassinations. For example he used cyanide spray on his victims to make the death appear to be of natural causes and used the Gemini Lounge as a slaughter house where he would chop up the bodies and distribute the parts throughout New York State. Kuklinskis’ only rule was that he did not kill women or children.
I really enjoyed this movie which is reminiscent of Goodfellas. Michael Shannon played the part of Kuklinski superbly and had his voice, mannerisms and intensity perfected. Ray Liotta starred as Roy Demeo portraying a role that fitted the genre of character we love to see him play. David Schwimmer (Ross from Friends) played a mob foot soldier. It was weird to see him in a mob movie. He sported a hilarious moustache and pony tail and fitted into the role well. Kuklinski lived a double life and director and writer Ariel Vromen (Danika) succeeded in conveying both sides of his personality. My only negative point would be that many elements of the story were toned down in comparison to the true story told in the book by Philip Carlo or in the HBO special where Kuklinski himself gave a detailed account of his killings. Most Mafia movies are extremely violent and this tamed in comparison. Saying that it is a must see film and will definitely be added to the DVD collection. 4/5
