Poltergeist tells the tale of a family who move to a new home which is attacked by spirits who take their youngest daughter captive to help them cross over 'into the light'. The family must come together to rescue her with the aid of a paranormal investigation team.
The original 1982 Poltergeist movie is one of my favorite horrors of all time so going into this movie I already knew it was never going to match or better the classic horror. The horror movie genre has evolved so much that many younger viewers look back at these classics such as Poltergeist and the Exorcist and say they were not 'that scary' but we need to remember how long ago these movies were released and for their time they were pretty terrifying to their viewers. So my first point is no it is no where near as good as the first but it actually wasn't as bad as some of the other rebooths that have disgraced our screens like the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.
Many of the signature scenes were kept in the story but they also tried to update it to the social media digital age we now live in throwing in a corny ghost hunting reality show, I'm sure we can all name a few of those lol. In the original the whole story revolved around Carol Ann but this time the little brother was also very central to the story. I found the actors extremely likable which was a bonus after some of the horror casting disasters of late (Annabelle).
One of my biggest worries was how would they ever replace Zelda Rubinstein who played Tangina who had one of my favorite lines in horror history 'this house is clean' in the original.Well I was pleasantly surprised with the new version of Tangina in the form of Carrigan Burke played by Jared Harris son of legendary Irish actor Richard Harris. I thought he was so funny and my favorite character in the movie.
Now for the scares. While there are some good quiet quiet BANG scares this definatley is not a movie you need to watch with the lights on. I went to see it with two ladies who's nerves can't take a horror movie and they didn't even find it that scary. Also the 3D was quite pointless with only 1 or 2 memorable moments.
Over all it was a good attempt at a rebooth, not a great horror but an ok movie and I give it 3 out of 5.
